How to Keep Your Cat Cool in Summer
Warm weather invites outdoor fun for people, but for cats—especially those with outdoor access—summer can bring discomfort and health risks. Even indoor cats may struggle when temperatures rise. Use these practical tips to keep your cat safe, comfortable, and cool all summer long.
Below are effective, easy-to-follow strategies to help maintain your cat’s comfort during hot weather.
1. Provide Plenty of Fresh Water
Always keep cool, fresh water available. Place multiple bowls around the house so less mobile cats can reach water easily, and put shaded bowls outdoors for cats that go outside. Change water frequently to keep it appealing and prevent bacterial growth.
2. Ensure Ample Shade
Outdoor cats need reliable shady spots—trees, covered patios, or insulated shelters. If you have a catio or outdoor enclosure, include shaded areas and ensure the cat can retreat indoors if needed. For indoor cats, block intense direct sunlight from their favorite perches or provide alternative resting spots out of the sun.
3. Control Indoor Temperature
If your cat lives indoors, manage the indoor climate. Air conditioning is ideal, but fans that promote airflow also help. Ceiling fans or strategically placed standing fans (positioned safely out of reach) lower perceived temperature and improve comfort.
4. Prevent Sunburn
Cats—especially light-colored or thin-furred ones—can get sunburned, often on ear tips and noses. On very sunny days, keep vulnerable cats indoors and limit their exposure to strong direct sunlight.
5. Regular Grooming
Daily brushing removes loose hair and prevents mats that trap heat near the skin. Grooming promotes airflow through the coat and helps your cat regulate body temperature more efficiently. For long-haired breeds, more frequent grooming during summer helps reduce overheating.

6. Offer Cool Resting Surfaces
Provide cool surfaces such as tile floors, shaded balconies, or a self-cooling pad. Cats must be able to move away from any cooling or heating device if they become too cold or warm, so avoid restricting their access to alternative spots.
7. Schedule Active Time Carefully
Keep play sessions during the cooler parts of the day—early morning or evening—so exercise doesn’t coincide with peak heat. Shorter, more frequent play sessions help maintain fitness without overheating.
8. Keep Windows Secure
If you leave windows open without air conditioning, be cautious: screens can give way if a cat lunges or pushes to chase birds or insects. Open windows only enough to allow airflow without creating a gap a cat could squeeze through, and check screen integrity regularly.

9. Protect Food From Heat and Pests
Warm temperatures accelerate spoilage and attract ants or flies. Don’t leave perishable wet food outside; bring bowls indoors and replace food frequently. Monitor food quality to prevent digestive upsets from spoiled meals.
10. Watch Paw Pad Safety
Hot pavement, asphalt, and sand can burn paw pads. Avoid walking cats on hot surfaces during peak heat and check pads for cuts, burns, or foreign objects. If you treat your lawn with pesticides or fertilizers, keep cats indoors until treatments have dried and are safe.
11. Never Leave Your Cat in a Parked Car
Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise dangerously and quickly, even with the windows cracked. Never leave a cat unattended in a car, not even for a short errand.
12. Recognize and Respond to Heatstroke
Heatstroke is life-threatening and can develop rapidly. Signs include panting or rapid breathing, reddened gums, elevated body temperature, unsteady gait, vomiting, drooling, glazed eyes, severe lethargy, or collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your cat to a cool area, apply cool (not ice-cold) damp towels to the neck and body, offer small amounts of water if the cat is alert, and contact an emergency veterinarian immediately.

Summer can be a wonderful season for enrichment and exploration. While keeping your cat cool and safe, remember that balanced nutrition supports energy, recovery, and overall health. Choose high-quality, species-appropriate diets to help your cat stay active and resilient during warmer months.
