When introducing any new cat food, plan a gradual conversion over 7–10 days. Allowing extra time gives your cat a chance to accept the new flavor and lets their digestive system adjust to different ingredients, which helps minimize the risk of vomiting or diarrhea.
Begin by mixing roughly 10% new kibble into your cat’s current food, increasing the proportion of the new food by about 10% each day. If you notice resistance — your cat leaving food, vocalizing, or otherwise refusing to eat — slow the pace. Reduce the new food by 10% and pause the transition for a day or two before trying again. Never rush this process: some cats will refuse food entirely if stressed, so make sure they consistently eat a satisfactory portion, or step back in the transition schedule until they are comfortable.
Using the new kibble as a treat can also help. Offer a few kibbles by hand as a positive, low-pressure experience — five or six pieces can be enough. If you give larger amounts as treats, remember to adjust meal portions so your cat’s total daily calories remain appropriate during the transition.
Choosing the right bowl and feeding location makes a difference. Many cats prefer wider, shallower bowls so their whiskers don’t brush the sides — a sensitivity sometimes called “whisker stress.” Avoid very small bowls for both food and water. Place bowls in quiet, low-traffic areas because cats generally prefer privacy while eating. Also provide plenty of fresh water near the food bowl and in other locations around the home; proper hydration is especially important for cats fed primarily dry food.
